Historical Background:
On the 5 of October 1941 during the Battle of Mtsensk the Soviet commander General Katukov sent the 4th Tank Brigade to halt the German 4th Panzer Divisions advance on Mtsensk. The Germans had a column of tanks heading across the bridge with two 100mm guns deployed to protect the bridge. The Russian T-34's and KV1's advanced in two waves. This was one of the first times that the Russians advanced en masse with their tanks and not on a broad front as they had done previously. One wave moved to the road while the other emerged from the woods to hit the Germans flank. German 105mm howitzers were deployed on the other side of the river and opened fire on the advancing tanks. The Germans had placed camouflage nets over their gun next to the bridge and when the Russians came in range and also opened fire.

At this moment the Russian's had the advantaged because the PzKw's did not have the range on the T-34's and KV1's. But the Russians kept advancing to the point that they were able to take out a few of the guns but this enabled the PzKw's to engage back effectively. German infantry began to climb on the tanks and throw petrol bombs. The Russians for this mistake were forced back with loss of five tanks. The Germans withdrew across the river and the battle turned to a stand-off.
