Historical Background:
March 1944, 3rd Ukrainian Front of General Malinovski advanced towards lower Bug and the city of Nikolaev (Mykolaïv). On the 26th of March, a Russian assault group of only 68 soldiers, under the command of Senior lieutenant Konstantin Olshansky, arrived on boat on the river Ingul and landed near the elevator of the shipyard. During two days, Olshansky soldiers, totally surrounded in Nikolaev, repulsed 18 German attacks and inflicted heavy losses to the enemy. On the 28th of March, when finally tanks of the 2nd Guards Mechanized Corps of general Sviridov entered in the city, they found only 12 surviving soldiers, all wounded. For their bravery, the 68 soldiers of Olshansky group were declared "Heros of the Soviet Union", most of them posthumously.
