Historical Background:
On April 30th the Australians guarding Hill 209 could see the dust clouds of a German attack forming two miles across the line. At 8 o'clock PM in the darkness, after a heavy strafing and artillery barrage the German sappers attacked and cut through the barbed wire and mine fields. Then the German infantry infiltrated the line and set up machine gun posts behind the Australian positions and laid down a cross fire.
In the morning the German tanks attacked and drove all the way to the 2/24th's reserves. The heavily engaged these units and disabled the Australian anti-tank weapons, however they drove blindly onto the minefields and after taking casualties they withdrew under the cover of a dust storm.
