Historical Background:
After the success of the US bridgehead near Cattenom on the Moselle river and the battle of fort Koenigsmacker, Germans organized a counter-attack. A "kampfgruppe" of the 25.PanzerGrenadier Division was ordered to destroy the US bridgehead. In the morning of the 12th of November, the 35.PanzerGrenadier Regiment, reinforced by some tanks and assault guns, advanced on the road from Kerling to Petite Hettange in order to reach the Moselle river and to destroy the bridge built by US engineers at Malling. The German kampfgruppe reached the village of Petite Hettange but was badly repulsed by the heavy fire of US infantry units and the only two tanks-destroyers M-10 present in the bridgehead.
