Historical Background:
17th Infantry Division was withdrawing from the Bilin river to the Sittang river. The 214th and 215th Japanese infantry regiments pursued the British soldiers and tried to outflanked them in order to cut off the retreat at Sittang bridge. Only one British brigade had reached the bridge and defended it, the two others were still far away in the east. Japanese soldiers attacked in the morning of the 22nd of February and threatened to capture the bridge. The British commander ordered at that time to blow up the bridge immediately. The two British brigades still on the east side of the Sittang were sacrificed. If a part of British soldiers succeeded to cross the river in swimming or by ferry, the major part was taken prisoner and all heavy weapons and trucks were definitively lost.
