Historical Background:
While the garrison of Pegu escaped from the Japanese encirclement and moved on the road of Hlegu, the garrison of Rangoon abandoned the city, as General Alexander said it was indefensible. But the British columns were stopped at Taukkyan by a Japanese roadblock when their main force advanced to attack Rangoon by the west side. On the 7th of March, several attacks were made to destroy the roadblock but all failed with heavy losses. In the morning of the 8th of March, the British troops prepared to make a major attack on the roadblock and found it virtually abandoned by the Japanese. So, the British columns could succeed to exit the trap and to withdraw to the north.
