Historical Background:
In January of 1942, the 15th Japanese army invaded Burma, coming from Thailand. After the capture of Victoria Point, Mergui and Tavoy airfields, Japanese troops attacked Moulmein on the Salween river. The 16th Indian Brigade defended fiercely the city during two days, inflicting heavy losses to the Japanese. Then, as the battle was lost, the troops were evacuated on the other side of the Salween. This was really the beginning of the "Great Retreat".
