Historical Background:
During the night 25th to 26th of December 1944, Axis troops entrenched in the Gothic line, launched an offensive against units of the 92nd US Infantry Division in Garfagnana sector, it was Operation "Winter Storm". This Axis offensive was limited because of lack of troops, tanks and fuel and consisted of three infantry columns (two with RSI soldiers and one with German soldiers), advancing in the Serchio valley. The attack by surprise in the darkness gave the advantage to the Axis troops who defeated the 92nd US ID and some Italian partisans groups. In less than two days, Axis troops reached their objectives, the villages of Barga and Piano di Coreglia. This was a great success for Axis : the Axis defense of the Gothic line was improved in this sector, the 5th US Army Corps was tactically tripped out because of the rout of the 92nd US ID and RSI troops morale was increased by this successful offensive.
