Historical Background:
The Pimple was a small, 300 yard long hill along the "Jap" track, flanking Mubo and its airfield. It was a very steep hill, and on it the Japanese had prepared an ambush with well concealed Machine Gun and Mortar emplacements, with vicious firing lanes.
The Australian attack on the 24 of April called for an artillery and air bombardment, followed by two attacks. 14 Platoon would head up laws track, break off and try to flank the position, whilst 13 Platoon would attack straight up Jap track. The bombardment did little as the Japanese withdrew down the track to underground bomb shelters and quickly manned their defenses once again as soon as it was over. The ensuing Australian attacks soon floundered as they encountered machine gun fire from concealed positions that they could not locate and sniper fire from the jungle trees above. With little progress made whats over, the Australians withdrew. The Australians tried many more attacks on the Pimple after this first one, but none dislodged the Japanese and further attacks were discontinued after on the 7 May.
