Historical Background:
The attack against the Wadi Muatered on the southern edge of the Bardia defenses took place at night on 3 January 1941. The attack was carried out by the 2/6th Battalion of Arthur Godfrey. Godfrey was only ordered to make a limited attack but he instead decided to attack all out. The attack was neither well planned nor well executed.
B, C and D companies all attacked the Italian defenses on the other side of the Wadi and all were able to gain an entry. However D company was heavily counter attacked and forced to withdraw into the wadi which was covered by Italian machine guns and targeted by artillery. D company was almost completely annihilated. The two other companies were likewise marooned. Even though he still had A company in reserve, there was no way of bringing it into play without annihilation.
The 2/6th remained pinned down until the Italian collapse on the 5th. For some reason Godfrey refused to outflank the Italians with a platoon operating independently on the east. The foolhardy attack at Wadi Muatered resulted in the heaviest casualties sustained by any unit at Bardia.
