Historical Background:
After the capture of Termoli by commandos of the Special Service Brigade on the 3rd of October 1943, German troops reacted quickly. Generalfeldmarschall Kesselring ordered to the 16.Panzer Division to counter-attack and recapture Termoli. On the 5th of October, German tanks appeared on San Giacomo ridge and then advanced towards the city. Anti-tank guns of the 11th Infantry Brigade inflicted them some losses but British troops, separated from the main force because of the destruction of the pontoon bridge by the rising of the Biferno river, were in very bad situation in front of the tanks attack. Once the pontoon bridge was repaired, British tanks could cross the Biferno and the situation changed in favor of the British troops. The German 16.Panzer Division had to withdraw and finally the 8th Army won the battle of Termoli.
