Historical Background:
On the 19th of August 1944, the Falaise pocket was virtually closed : The 4th Canadian Armoured Division was in Saint Lambert sur Dives and Polish troops of the 1st Polish Armoured Division joined the 90th US Infantry Division in Chambois. Only a thin corridor allowed the Germans to leave the pocket : " the corridor of death", under continuous fire of Allied artillery and air bombing. To cross the Dives river, there were only one bridge in Saint Lambert and a ford at Moissy. These two way points were quickly jammed by the whole German army in retreat. Only the most mobile troops succeeded to cross the Dives and to escape, the others were killed or made prisoners by Allied troops.
