Historical Background: On the 28th of October 1944, Soviet General Malinovsky, commander of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, was ordered by Stalin to launch immediately a new offensive to capture Budapest. This offensive began the day after and on the 31st of October the city of Kecskemet fell in Soviet hands. Everywhere the mud covered the battlefield and slowed down the movement of the two armies. On the 2nd of November, Soviet vanguard units, 2nd and 4th Guards Mechanized Corps and 24th Rifle Corps, entered in the East suburbs of Budapest and fought against German and Hungarian defense lines. Soviet troops being short of ammunition and fuel and under the threat of a surrounding by a German counter-attack, had to withdraw on the 6th of November. Budapest had won a little respite. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
