Historical Background:
Early in the morning of the 10th June 1944, the 8th Durham Light Infantry Battalion (50th Infantry Division Northumbrian), after the night in the village of Saint-Pierre, was ready to continue its advance to Tilly-sur-Seulles then Villers Bocage. But the Germans attacked first : the infantrymen of the Panzer Grenadier Regiment 901, supported by some tanks of the Panzer Lehr Division, attacked Saint-Pierre. The British first lines were taken quickly but the Durhams withdrew to the second line of defense and resisted firmly in the north of the village during the whole day. The day after, the Germans continued their attack and finally the 8th DLI abandoned the village on the 12th of June.
