Historical Background:
After the battle of Kasmiyeh, the 21st Australian brigade continue its advance towards Saïda on the coastal road. On the French Vichy side, a machine-gun platoon under the command of lieutenant de Mesmay, received the order to resist in front of the village of Adloun "without any idea of retreat". Reinforced by an armored platoon of three tanks and a Legion company, the French unit prepared a solid defensive position with trenches, anti-tank guns, machine-guns and some minefields. During the battle, the Royal Navy made an heavy bombardment on the positions, but the French stopped the Australians until the 12th of June. Then as in Kasmiyeh, they were overcame by numbers. Lieutenant de Mesmay was found dead behind his machine-gun, he had fulfilled his mission : to keep the position until the end.
