Historical Background:
The 5th Indian Brigade, followed by the Free French Brigade, crossed the border of Syria on the 8th of June early in the morning and capture easily the city of Deraa. But in front of Cheik Meskine, Punjab infantrymen were suddenly under the fire of Vichy French soldiers (a Senegalese company and an armored cars platoon). They were too strafed by same Vichy French aircraft. Several bren-carriers were destroyed and the Indian attack was repelled. Brigadier Lloyd decided to resume the attack on the 9th of June but during the night, the French made a sortie in force and evacuated Cheik Meskine.
