Historical Background:
The main defense line for Damascus was on the north of a small and almost empty river called Nahr el Aouaj. On the 15th of June 1941, Allied troops attacked, on the left in front of Kissoueh with the 5th Indian Brigade, on the right near Nehja with the Free French of BM2 . In spite of a fierce defense of Vichy troops surprised by the attack during a relief, Indian soldiers of the 3rd Punjab Battalion captured Kissoueh. For the Free French, it was not the same thing : Free French Senegalese troops (of the BM2) were confronted to the Vichy Senegalese troops (of the 17th RTS) near the Djebel Kelb. The Free French lost half of their troops in the battle and stopped the attack.
