Historical Background:
Djebel Maani, just before the main defensive line for Damascus, is the higher point of the area. The 5th battalion of 1st RTM and an artillery battery were in defense on it. BM1 of the 1st Free French Division was ordered to capture the djebel. Free French troops under the command of major Delange failed during the first assault in the morning of the 11th of June. The second assault, in the middle of the day, under an oppressive heat, was nevertheless more successful. This fratricide battle was fierce and losses were heavy from the two sides. Finally, Djebel Maani was on the hands of Free French at the end of the day.
