Historical Background:
After the battle of Saïda in June 1941, Vichy Troops withdrew on the Damour river and prepared entrenchment. In spite of the continuous bombing by the Royal Navy, the position seemed impregnable. In the morning of the 5th of July, two Australian infantry brigades attacked after a powerful artillery barrage. On the French side, the 2nd battalion / 6th Regiment of Foreign Legion, under the command of Major Brisset fought in close combat, driving back several times the Australians. Suffering heavy losses, the battalion of Legion was still holding their positions, but at 21h00, it received the order to withdraw. This last withdrawal of the Damour defences means the imminent fall of Beirut and the end of the Syrian campaign.
