Historical Background:
In May 1940, while the panzers of General Guderian were rushing to the Channel, the 62.Infanterie Division was flanking the Somme river in the area of Ham. In order to capture the bridges of Ham to establish a bridgehead on the south bank of the Somme, the Germans attacked both the sides of the city. In the east, they crossed the railway bridge in force, in the west they crossed the river by boats to capture the sugar refinery of Eppeville. First driven back from their positions, the Alpine soldiers of 140th and 141st Alpine Infantry Regiment counter-attacked with the support of some old FT-17 light tanks. They repulsed the enemy and took several prisoners. At the end of the day, the sugar refinery was recaptured by the French.
