Historical Background: In January 1942, the 2nd Shock Army made a breakthrough of the German lines on the Volkhov river and advanced toward Leningrad. But German troops stayed in position on the Volkhov and threatened to close the gap. Soviet troops carried on their attacks in order to widen the breach. A SS battalion from the SS-Polizei-Division was entrenched in small villages of Mostki, Lyubino Pole and Myasnoy Bor. On the 22nd of January, under a freezing cold, advancing with difficulty in snow-covered woods, Soviet infantrymen assaulted the German entrenchments and were decimated by the heavy fire of the defenders. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
