Historical Background: After the capture of Munda in New Georgia, Bougainville island was the next step before the attack on Bismarck islands. On the 1st of November 1943, two regiments of the 3rd Marine Division landed on the beaches of Empress Augusta Bay, on the west coast of Bougainville. One primary objective of this landing was Cape Torokina, main Japanese strong-point. About 270 Japanese soldiers of the 23rd Infantry regiment were entrenched in pillboxes in this area. In spite of a Japanese fierce defense, the US Marines could capture Cape Torokina during the day and make a solid beachhead on the coast of Bougainville. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
