Historical Background:
On the 16th of June 1940, Captain Bastiani, Fire brigade of Paris, was ordered to defend a bridge near Le Veurdre on River Allier. With the help of Lieutenant Legris, he could rally about thirty soldiers from several units. With these volunteers, he prepared a defensive position near the bridge. On the 18th of June, a German armored column (maybe from the 9.Panzer Division) arrived in front of the bridge. The Germans were repulsed by the fire of this little group of French soldiers. For three hours, they stopped the enemy inflicting heavy losses. The German infantry could cross the river upstream from the village of Le Veurdre in order to outflank the French position. Captain Bastiani, Lieutenant Legris and five others french soldiers were killed during the fight, the others with several wounded had to surrender. When the people of the village buried the seven heroes in the cemetery of Le Veurdre, the Germans payed honor to them for their gallantry and the sacrifice of their lives. In the same time, in London, General de Gaulle gave his famous "Appel" on the BBC.
