Historical Background:
After the US landing on Bougainville on the 1st of November 1943, the Japanese command based on Rabaul decided to send out troops against the US beach head. On the 7th of November, the main Japanese force, composed with units of the 53rd and 54th Infantry Regiments, landed in the night near the Larima River and advanced towards the US defense perimeter of the 9th Marines Regiment. The 5th coy of 53rd Infantry Regiment landed at 06h00 near Koromokina lagoon and fought directly with the US first lines. During this time, some Marines advanced patrols were overhung and isolated in the jungle by the main Japanese force. The 9th Marines Regiment began to counter-attack the landed units who have taken advantage of abandoned foxholes and emplacements of the departed Marines battalions. This counter-attack was pinned down by the Japanese fire and particularly by some tree snipers. But finally, with the help of some light tanks and the support of the artillery, the Marines succeeded in establishing a secure defensive position. The Japanese attempt to destroy the US beach head in Bougainville had failed.
