Historical Background:
On Bougainville island, US troops continued to extend their beachhead, advancing to the Piva river, while reinforcing their positions. The 3rd Raider Battalion had established a roadblock on the Piva Trail. On the 7th of November 1943 at 14h30, Japanese soldiers of the 23rd infantry regiment attacked the roadblock. Owing to an artillery barrage and the close support of a mortar platoon, the Marines could stop the enemy assault. The Japanese withdrew but fired on the US positions with their own mortars.
