Historical Background: In order to weaken the Japanese troops in Bougainville, US General Geiger, commander of the 1st Marine Amphibious Corps ordered to make raids on the Japanese rear lines to disrupt communications and destroy installations and supplies. The 1st Parachute Battalion (Marines), just landed on Bougainville, was designated for this operation : the battalion, under the command of Major Fagan, had to land on Koiari beach, establish a temporary base and conduct raids along the coast and as far inland as the East West Trail. But on the 29th of November at 04h00 in the morning, the Marines discovered that they landed in a middle of a Japanese supply dump and that enemy forces were close of them. Quickly, the Japanese attacked the Marines but were repelled the first time. Under heavy fire of Japanese 90mm mortars, the Marines dug on the beach, waiting for a night evacuation by the Navy. They held their position up to the night with the excellent naval gunfire support of some destroyers, in particular the USS Fullam. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
