Historical Background: After the capture of Hellzapoppin Ridge, Marines operations consisted mainly of patrol missions between the Eagle and Torokina Rivers. One of these patrol found a group of Japanese soldiers in the vicinity of Hill 600A. At that time, the US Command decided to secure the area by establishing an outpost on the hill. On the 22nd of December, the Company I, 3rd Battalion/21st Marines, advanced to Hill 600A in order to capture it, but the Marines were driven back by the heavy fire coming from Japanese positions located on the reverse slope of the hill. On the 23rd of December, it was Company K which attacked the hill after a preliminary artillery fire. But due to the dense vegetation the artillery fire was ineffective and the Marines were, once again, repulsed. The following day, a Marine reconnaissance patrol found Hill 600A unoccupied : the Japanese had withdrawn during the night. This battle was the last action of the 3rd Marine Division on Bougainville. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
