Historical Background:
The Italian-Greek war began on the 28th of October 1940 in the morning by an Italian general offensive in Epire area. The execrable weather and the hard ground slowed quickly the advance of Italian troops. Moreover the Greek defenders , although they were smaller in number, fought with valor and raging, inflicting heavy losses to the Italians. On the 2nd of November, while Gravala hill was the place of a terrible battle with bayonets, L3/35 light tanks of the Centauro Division, advanced on the road Doliana to Kalpaki. They were stopped at the gate of the city by a deep minefield. Mines and the firing by Greek soldiers were devastating for the armored column which had to withdraw with heavy losses. The battle of Kalpaki became the symbol of the Greek resistance face to the Italian aggressor.
