Historical Background: The Metaxas Line was a Greek defense line composed of several forts as the French Maginot Line. This line was established in the Rhodope mountains along the border with Bulgaria. On the 6th of April 1941, this line was attacked by German troops during the invasion of Greece, Operation Marita. The German164.Infanterie Division was ordered to capture Fort Echinos and to advance towards Xanthi. Hardly bombed by the German artillery, Fort Echinos resisted during three days and repulsed several infantry attacks, inflicting heavy losses to German troops. Then in the night 8th to 9th April, knowing that there was no way out, the garrison of the fort made a sortie in order to join the Greek lines. But surrounded by German troops, the garrison had to surrender in the morning. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
