Historical Background:
The Metaxas Line was a Greek defense line composed of several forts as the French Maginot Line. This line was established in the Rhodope mountains along the border with Bulgaria. On the 6th of April 1941, this line was attacked by German troops during the invasion of Greece, Operation Marita. The German 50.Infanterie Division was ordered to capture Fort Nimfea and to advance towards Komotini. The German attack failed on the first day, but the fort was bombed during the night and several infantry attacks were made on the 7th of April. All the attacks failed but with the last one, in the evening, German infantrymen reached the first bunkers of the fort. They used smoke grenades, explosives and flame-throwers to fight against the Greek defenders. At 23h30, the atmosphere in the fort was stifling and the commanding officer of the fort surrendered, Fort Nimfea was captured.
