Historical Background:
The Metaxas Line was a Greek defense line composed of several forts as the French Maginot Line. This line was established in the Rhodope mountains along the border with Bulgaria. On the 6th of April 1941, this line was attacked by German troops during the invasion of Greece, Operation Marita.Early in the morning, Infanterie Regiment.125 crossed the Bistritsa river which was the border between Bulgaria and Greece and advanced in the Strymon valley. German infantrymen reached quickly the area of Fort Rupel but were repelled by machine guns fire in a first time. On the 7th of April, a new German attack was repelled again with heavy losses. On the 8th of April, in spite of several air bombings and artillery fire, the German infantry failed again to penetrate in the Greek defensive system. On the 9th of April in the afternoon, the defenders of Fort Rupel received the order to cease fire from the East Macedonia Army command in Thessaloniki. Fort Rupel surrendered but was not captured during the battle.
