Historical Background: The Metaxas Line was a Greek defense line composed of several forts as the French Maginot Line. This line was established in the Rhodope mountains along the border with Bulgaria. On the 6th of April 1941, this line was attacked by German troops during the invasion of Greece, Operation Marita. The 5.Gebirgs division crossed the Bulgarian border in the area of Petrich. The Gebirgs Jäger Rgt.100 had to attack Fort Kelkaya while the Gebirgs Jäger Rgt.85 attacked Fort Istimbey and Popotlivista. German assault troops were repelled on the first day, but on the 7th of April, they succeeded to reach the top of the forts and to block all the outlets of the bunkers. Then, with flame-throwers and explosives, they managed to asphyxiate slowly the garrisons of the forts which ended to surrender during the next night. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
