Historical Background:
During Operation Extended Capital, the XXXIII Army Corps had taken Budalin on the 10th of January and continued its advance to the Irrawaddy. The city of Monywa, on the Chindwin River was the next objective of the 20th Indian Infantry Division. Moniwa was controlled by three Japanese battalions from the 31st and 33rd Infantry Divisions, entrenched in bunkers in the north and east of the city. The British attack began on the 20th of January after an artillery barrage and an air bombing planned to weaken the Japanese defenses. The 22th of January, after two days of battle, Monywa was in British hands.
