Historical Background:
In May 1944, US General Clark needed a breakthrough offensive to leave the bridgehead where his divisions were held up in a limited area for several months. He ordered to the 6th US Army Corps to breakthrough the German lines at Cisterna di Littoria. From the 23rd to the 25th of May, a fierce battle occurred to take the city and to cross the railroad converted in front line by the Germans. US troops suffered very heavy losses (1600 KIA, wounded or missing), mainly in the 3rd US Infantry Division, but the Germans drew back. At that time, Clark could send the US tanks in the Velletry gap to reach finally Valmontone and the national road n°6 leading directly to Rome. The breakthrough was done !
