On the 08th of March 1945, following the aggressive defense ordered by General Cowan, a mobile column of the 63rd Indian Brigade advancing to Piawbwe, was attacked by Japanese in the village of Wetlet. The 106th Japanese Infantry Regiment had transformed the village in a strong point with bunkers, minefields, snipers, machine-guns, mortars and anti-tank guns.
