Historical Background:
In mid-December 1940, the 1st South Africa Infantry Brigade engaged in their first offensive action against the Italians in East Africa, a raid on the town of El Wak straddling the border of Kenya and Italian Somaliland. The attacking force was divided into 2 groups, "Dickforce," which was further divided into 2 columns, and "Pinforce," with each column supported by armored cars or light tanks.

After a slow march through the thick bush during the nights of Dec. 14-15, both forces were finally in position on the morning of Dec. 16. On the right of "Pinforce," the 1st Transvaal Scottish quickly overran the Italian headquarters, while on the left the Natal Carbineers attacked the native village of El Bhura Haja. In Column A of "Dickforce," the Dukes made short work of British El Wak on the Kenya side of the border and the El Ghura waterhole. Meanwhile in Column B, the Ist Gold Coast Regiment with the South African light tanks overran Italian El Wak. By midday, the Natal Carbineers eventually routed the Italians at El Bhura Haja forcing them to abandon their guns and beat back a counterattack on their right flank.

The South Africans had captured large quantities of arms and ammunition as well as valuable intelligence from the Italian headquarters. More than that, they had proved themselves in combat and dealt a major blow to Italian superiority in East Africa.
