Historical Background:
Goodenough Island is situated north-east of Papua New Guinea, between Buna and Milne Bay. In 1942, the island was occupied by Japanese marines of the 5th Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force and some engineers. In the planning for the Buna campaign, General MacArthur decided to capture Goodenough Island to guard the flank of the main attack. The 2/12 Battalion of the 18th Australian Brigade in charge of the operation, landed in the night of 22nd of October 1942 on the beach of Mud Bay while a small force was landed at Taleba Bay. This force had a first fighting with the Japanese and had to withdraw and finally was evacuated by boats to Mud Bay. Then, on the 24th of October, LTC Arnold, commander of the "Drake" Force, launched an attack on Kilia village, but didn't succeed to capture it. Finally, Japanese troops were evacuated on the neighbouring island, Fergusson Island.
On the 27th of October, Goodenough Island was declared secured by Australians.
