Historical Background: After the battle of Smolensk, Hitler decided to send troops of the Army Group Center to Ukraine where Army Group South had some difficulties to capture Kiev. PanzerGruppe 2 under the command of General Guderian was ordered to capture the bridge on the Desna river at Novgorod Severskiy. This bridge, defended by some anti-tanks guns and ready to be destroyed by explosives, was captured by a "coup de main" of the panzergrenadiers of the 3.Panzer Division. A late soviet counter-attack didn't succeed to retake it or destroyed it. So at that time, Soviet troops surrounded in the Kiev pocket had no more chance to escape. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
