Historical Background:
The 10th Infantry Brigade of the 4th Canadian Armored Division was tasked to cross the Ghent Canal to make a bridgehead on the village of Moerbrugge. On the 8 September 1944, "B", "C" and "D" companies of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada crossed the canal on civilians boats found there. The first casualties occurred during the crossing under the enemy mortar fire. Then the battle continued in the village where the Canadians had to fight against several German counter-attacks. On the 9 September, the bridgehead was reinforced by four companies of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Finally in the morning of the 10 September, Canadian engineers completed to construct a Bailey bridge and tanks of the division could cross the canal and break through enemy lines. At that time, German troops withdrew and the Canadian bridgehead was secured. The battle of Moerbrugge was over.
