Historical Background:
In April 1943, Longstop Hill was still in German hands, but at that time the balance was in favor of the Allies in Tunisia and they were preparing the last battle. On the 23 April, after an intensive artillery preparation, the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and thee 1st East Surrey Regiment, two units of the 36th Infantry Brigade (78th British Infantry Division), supported by Churchill tanks of the North Irish Horse, attacked German positions on Djebel Ahmar. In spite of heavy losses, the British troops reduced the machine-gun nests and captured the djebel. On the 26 April, it was the turn of the 6th Battalion Royal West Kents and the 5th Buffs (East Kents) to attack Djebel el Rhar, again with the support of Churchill tanks. In spite of the relentless resistance of German soldiers of the Afrika Schutzen Regiment 962 and III/Grenadier Regiment 754, Longstop Hill was definitively captured by British troops. The road to Tunis was now open for the Allies.
