Historical Background: The 1st DMI (ex-Free French Division) was in the French Riviera in March 1945 after the battle of Alsace. This unit received the order to recapture the Authion mountain (Operation Canard) where a German battalion of Grenadier Regiment 107, was entrenched in early war forts of the Maginot line in the Alps : "La Forca", "Millefourches", "Plan Caval" and "la Redoute des trois communes". On the 10 April, the BIMP (bataillon d'infanterie de marine et du Pacifique) launched the first attack under the enemy fire. This attacked failed with heavy losses. The day after, the same battalion captured the barracks called "Cabanes Vieilles" and continued the attack of the forts. Millefourches fortress was the first to be captured by assault groups equipped with bazookas and flame-throwers. On the 12 April, another battalion of the division, the BM 21 (bataillon de marche n°21) relieved the BIMP and attacked La Forca fortress in spite of the fire from French and German artilleries. After the capture of La Forca, it was Plan Caval fortress which received the assault by French infantry and tanks. Then, at the end of the day, a single Stuart tank of the 1st RFM (régiment de fusiliers-marins) attacked the next fortress, "la Redoute des trois communes" with the support of only four infantrymen. This heroic group received the surrender of this last fortress. At that time, all the Authion mountain was in the French hands. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history.
