Historical Background:
During the Huon Peninsula campaign in New Guinea, the 20th Infantry Brigade of the 9th Australian Division was ordered to land on the rear of the Japanese army to take Finschhafen and build an airfield. The landing area chosen was codenamed Scarlet Beach and was about ten kilometers north of Finschhafen. On the 22 September 1943, the first assault wave landed in the darkness and on the wrong beach. The second wave arrived in the daylight on the right beach but under the fire of Japanese machine-guns and mortars entrenched in bunkers on the hills overlooking the beach. Finally, in spite of some losses, the beach head was under Australian control, the Japanese defenders having withdrawn inland.
