Historical Background:
During the opening phases of Barbarossa, the first great pincer movement happened between the towns of Bialystok and Minsk. As a result four Soviet armies were trapped, and the Russian high command was forced to commit whatever units were available to form a new defensive line. Time became crucial to Russian success. In an attempt delay the German advance, a crack unit the 1st Moscow Motor Rifle Division was sent to intercept Guderian's 18th Panzer Division as it headed toward Smolensk. Should Smolensk be taken, Moscow would be only 230miles from the front line. The Germans had to be slowed if they could not be stopped, not matter the price. Six miles east of Borisov, near the village of Lipki, the two armoured spearheads met in a series of clashes.
When the Germans saw the T-34s and KV-2s looming up ahead, the German froze in short-lived horror at the size of the Soviet machines. Up until now they had only encountered smaller Russian T-26s and BTs. But the Germans were quick to recover and soon the smaller Russian tanks were all in flames. Next the German gunners out manoeuvred and outshot the inexperienced Russian tank crews to score hits against the tracks and other weak points of the T-34s and KV-2s to disable them. The futile counterattack near Lipki then collapsed, like so many others in the summer of 1941.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
