Historical Background:
After their withdrawal on the Kokoda trail because of the failure of their offensive towards Port Moresby, Japanese troops were entrenched on the east coast of New Guinea at Buna, Gona and Sanananda. The 25th Australian Brigade, arrived near Gona on mid-November 1942 and was stopped by Japanese heavy defensive positions. The Australians attacked five times, from the 18th of November to the 6th of December, but were repelled with heavy losses. But on the 8th of December, the 30th Australian Brigade made the decisive attack and captured the place. On that day, the Allied headquarters received this message : "Gona's gone".
