Historical Background: Soviet troops of the 1st Far East Front, under the command of Marshall Meretzkov, had the city of Mutankiang as first objective. The eastern road from the Soviet border to the city ran across a mountainous area heavy fortified by the Japanese. Artillery batteries were entrenched of the top of some hills and could fire to any target on range. Meretzkov's units had to cross this area and neutralize the strong points and particularly the Mount Shozu which was heavily shelled. .
