The order for the 3rd Algerian Infantry Division (3e DIA), just arrived on the Italian front, was to advance in the valley of San Elia. But before, it needed to capture the Mount Monna Casale defended by the 3/85.GebirgsJaeger Regiment. The 7th Algerian Rifle Regiment (7e RTA) was ordered to attack on the 12th of January. The snow had fallen again during the night. In the morning, the 3rd battalion attacked hills 1256 and1264, called "les jumelles", in the middle of the mountain. When the Algerian riflemen reached the summit, the Germans counter-attacked and repelled the attackers; Three times, the riflemen attacked and at the end, they finished to capture "les jumelles". The Germans withdrew completely the Mount Monna Casale but the cost of the victory was heavy for the Algerians, the assault companies were decimated.
