Historical Background:
During the battle for Russia, Army Group Centre found itself on the outskirts of Moscow by mid autumn. On the 26th of September, Hitler launched Operation Typhoon that was designed to bring Moscow under German control. However, mud and freezing weather conditions, as well as growing Russian resistance brought the operation to a standstill. On the 2nd of December a German reconnaissance Battalion of the 35th Infantry Division moved into Khimki, a suburb of Moscow, northwest of the city. The men of the 35th Infantry Division had moved closer to Moscow than any other German units, and the spires of the Kremlin were in sight. The next morning Russian defenders would launch a counter attack against the invaders in an effort to protect their capital.
With news of German troops in Khimki, the Red Army reacted rapidly. Liaison officers quickly organized the local factory workers into a defensive fighting force. A few available tanks were also sent into battle. The hastily assembled forces were able to throw the Germans back who were already exhausted by the freezing weather conditions. Unknown to the Germans at the time, but the penetration of the 35th into Khimki would be the closest the Wehrmacht would ever come to Moscow, and they would be the only troops under German command to ever catch a glimpse of the Kremlin spires.
