It was the beginning of Operation Uranus whose the aim was first to breakthrough the lines of the 3rd Romanian Army and then to surround German forces in Stalingrad. In front of Kletskaya, Romanian soldiers of the14th Infantry Division tried to resist in their trenches but, with a lack of anti-tank weapons and few tanks, they couldn't prevent Soviet tanks of the 5th Armoured Army to broke their lines.
