Historical Background:
After Operation Little Saturn, the Soviet command launched the Ostrogojsk-Rossoch offensive against the 2nd Hungarian Army. Threatened of surroundings by the breaking of the Hungarian front, the Italian Alpine Corps began to withdraw in the snowy Russian steppe. On the road to Nikolaevka, Italian divisions Julia and Cuneense were stopped by a Soviet roadblock in the village of Varvarovka. Italian Alpini attacked the village to go through at all costs. In spite of very high losses, the Alpini crossed the village and continued their withdrawal to Nikolaevka.
