Historical Background: After the battle in the area of Combles-en Barrois, the 1st Colonial Division withdrew on the Meuse river near Bazoilles and Bourmont. At that time, after a month of continuous fighting, units were at the minimum strength. At Bourmont, the 1st Battalion of the 14th Senegalese Regiment wrote a glorious page in the history of the division by fighting to the end to defend the crossing of the Meuse river. From the 18th to the 19th of June, the Senegalese soldiers under the command of Major Voillemin fought fiercely in the village according the motto of the Regiment : "J'y suis, j'y reste" (I am here and I stay here). Surrounded by superior forces and with no hope to be relieved, they fought until the end of ammunition, inflicting severe losses to the enemy. The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
